Club History Version 1

Season 1993/94
Newcastle had bounced back into the premiership in style under Kevin Keegan and the manager knew that he had got the club to where they wanted to be and now he had the task of keeping them there. In the close season Keegan brought in Nicky Papavasiliou from cyprus.Alex Mathie arrived from Greenock Morton and Keegan also bought Liverpool goalkeeper Mike Hooper. The signing that caught the publics eye though was the arrival of former legend Peter Beardsley from Everton for £1.3m.Unfortunately for Peter he was injured in a testimonial match at anfield after clashing with giant defender Niel Ruddock and he would miss the start of the season.Uniteds first premiership outing was against Tottenham but Keegans men were never in the game and they lost the game 0-1.Newcastle lost again at Coventry and after this poor start you wouldnt chose to play your next game at old trafford but after Ryan Giggs had given man utd the lead Andy Cole grabbed his first premiership goal to earn a draw.By the end of October united had really found there form,Welsh striker Malcolm Allen arrived from Millwall for a modest £300,000.By the end of October United had demolished Wimbledon 4-0 with a peter Beardsley hat trick and one from Andy Cole.Cole really was a scoring sensation , his goals in a black and white shirt where a part of every day life almost.By the christmas period United had reached an incredible 6th spot but better was to come.United smashed there transfer record fee when winger Ruel Fox arrived from Norwich for £2.3m but that was smashed just weeks later when Darren Peacock arrived from QPR for £2.6m.Newcastle were quickly getting a reputation for being entertainers,in march they beat swindon 7-1 an west ham 4-2 in successive weeks and Andy Cole was at the heart of it.With 3 games remaining United were in 4th spot and Andy Cole was on 39 premiership goals in his first season in the top flight and he grabbed a club record 40 in a season when he scored in a 5-1 victory over Villa.United finished in an amazing 3rd in the premiership and had scored over 80 goals in the process.Premiership teams beware Newcastle united were back and with a bang!.

SEASON 1994/1995
Season 1994/95 started with a bang for Kevin Keegan he made 4 summer signings.Classy defender Phillipe Albert from Anderlecht at £2.5m,Marc Hottiger arrived from Sion for £500,000.The lesser household names to be signed were Jason Drysdale from Watford and Steve Guppy from Wycombe.United won there first 6 matches in the premiership including wins against Chelsea an Arsenal and Andy Cole was scoring for fun. Also Barry Venison and Rob Lee made there international debuts.Paul Kitson arrived from Derby for £2.3m to add some cover up front.United were also back on the european stage and thrashed Antwerp 10-2 after 2 legs but were to be knocked out in the next round by Bilbao.By the christmas period United were in 3rd place but then the went 7 games without a win and scoring sensation Andy Cole hadnt scored for 9 games. The predator was sensationally sold to champions Man Utd for £6m plus exciting young winger Keith Gillespie.Paul Kitson did a good to fill Coles boots until the end of the season with united finishing 6th place.

SEASON 1995/1996
In the close season Keegan spent huge to try and make an assault on the premiership title.Goalkeeper Shaka Hislop was bought from Reading for £1.5m ,£2.5m really was a snip for one of europes finest David Ginola.Warren Barton was persuaded to move north the cost?£4m and finally the big one,a club record £6m for goalscorer Les Ferdinand.Newcastle had also completed the new super stadium boasting a capacity of 36,000.Newcastle won there first 4 games including a derby with Boro.Darren Huckerby joined the club from Lincoln while United were getting stronger on the pitch they faced Man Utd at old trafford on Boxing day.Andy Cole and Roy Keane won the game for the devils but United marched on after this opening up a 12 point gap!.The club then spent heavily again signing Tino Asprilla from Parma for £7.5m.Sadly though Newcastle fluttered and had dropped silly points by the tim Man utd came to st James' David Batty was making his united debut a recent signing from Blackburn.Newcastle ran the game but one chance was enough for Man utd to win 1-0.After this we conceded late goals and dropped points at Blackburn,Liverpool and Forest and that ultimately cost us the title it was a sad end to a great season.

SEASON 1996/1997
This season will surely go down as one of the most dramatic seasons in the clubs history.First of all the club smashed its transfer record fee to bring geordie Alan Shearer to the club for a whopping £15m but good value in my opinion. However he couldnt prevent the club being thrashed in the charity sheild 0-4 by man utd.He scored his first goal in a black and white shirt with a stunning free kick in a 2-0 win over wimbledon but united had an inconsistent start to the season. Thing soon picked up though an Shearer and Ferdinand started rattling in the goals and were influencial in a 2-1 win over sunderland the last tyne weir derby to be played at roker park. Then came the day every magpie fan had waited for Man utd at home the team who pipped us to the championship an embarressed us in the charity sheild we would take sweet revenge. In a scintilating game Newcastle won 5-0 Phillipe Alberts goal the pick of the bunch. After this win though we went 7 premiership games without a win and an impressive european campaign couldnt halt the slide.Keegans team then won 7-1 against spurs and then 3-0 against Leeds but after 4 glorious years incharge of the club special K decided to call it a day.Kenny Dalglish stepped into the breach and guided the club into 2nd place after a decent run of form.

SEASON 1997/1998
The close season saw many changes made by Kenny Dalglish as he aimed to stamp his own territory on the club.Coming in were Shay Given from Blackburn Rovers for £2m,Stuart Pearce on a free from notts forest.Temuri Ketsbaia was also a free transfer as were veterans Ian Rush and John Barnes.Allesandro Pistone arrived from inter milan for £4.5m and Danish strilker Jon dahl Tommason arrived from herenveen for £2m.On the out tray were favorites Les Ferdinand and David Ginola who both joined Tottenham for huge sums geordie boys Lee clark and Robbie Elliott also left.So how would Dalglish's reshuffle pay off ? the answer was disasterous.Newcastle fans including myself were expecting to challenge for the title but after a promising start it all slipped away and with Alan Shearer out for 6 months it looked like a difficult season.Infact come november united had only scored 9 premiership goals all season.Tothe champions league and this was uniteds first appearence in the competition and they were grouped with Barcelona Dynamo Kiev and Psv arguably 3 of europes top clubs.Barcelona came to st james for the first group match and what a night it was.A Tino Asprilla hat trick and a 3-2 win was the only real bright spot in Dalglish's newcastle Carreer. It was a bad season Newcastle crashed out of the champions league and could only manage a draw at non league Stevenage and with a dissapointing string of results during the christmas left Kenny Dalglish more concerned about the drop than the premiership trophy.Gary Speed arrived from Everton and was the best player towards the end of the season..Newcastle battled on but in the end Tino walked out of Newcastle and rejoined Parma.United did make the final of the fa cup but were well beaten by premiership champions Arsenal and they finishe 13th in the table just 4 points away from relegation.

SEASON 1998/1999
Kenny Dalglish was determined to answer his critics and out last seasons dissapointmens behind him.The Board backed Kenny with £15m to put things right he brought in Laurent charvet ,George Georgiadis,Nol Solano,Didi Hammann and world cup flop Stephane Guivarch though his stay was very breif. At the start of the new campaign the toon army was hoping for much better things. But for better luck in a penalty shoot out in last seasons play off final this could have been a local derby with Sunderland instead it was charlton who visited tyneside but the game ended in a dissapointing 0-0 draw. After a creditable draw against Chelsea the following week Kenny Dalglish was sacked. When the scot led the team out at wembley last season it seemed that a poor season could be rescued but united were well beaten on the day and despite spending £15m in the summer the Dalglish Newcastle partenership just hadnt worked.United acted quickly in appointing former Chelseas boss Ruud Gullitt who arrived with a big reputation but it would end on a sour note!. Newcastle had another dissapointing season.Despite Gullit spending heavily on players like Duncan Ferguson (£8m) Didier Domi (£4m) and Silvio Maric (£3.5m) the club could do no better than 13th place for the second year running.Though there was a fa cup final to look forward to against Man Utd.For the second year running United had got there but were again beaten 0-2 and were never really in the game overall not a great season for such a huge club.

SEASON 1999/2000
Ruud Gullit spent heavily in the summer after the dissapointment of another fa cup final defeat. He paraded more than £16m worth of talent as the preperations began for the new season.Marcelino arrived from Mallorca for £5.5m,Alain Goma arrived from PSG for £4.7m and his countryman Frank dumas swapped monaco for tyneside for £500,000.The signing that thrilled the fans most was the signature of England u-21 star Kieron Dyer from Ipswich Town.Alan Shearer had also signed a new 4 year contract in the summer.Despite the summer spending spreee United got off to the worst start in there premiership history after defeats against Aston villa, spurs and southampton Newcastle were bottom of the table.Despite a draw with wimbledon the following week Ruud Gullit left Alan Shearer on the bench for the big tyne weir derby , a match which Sunderland went on to win 2-1 and that spelt the end for Gullitt .After a disastorous 1-5 defeat at old trafford the following week Newcastle were looking like relegation candidates until Bobby Robson stepped in.The 68 year old had stood on the terraces as a lad and he breathed new life into the club and restored some much needed team spirit and also gave Rob Lee a shirt number. In his first home game in charge the magpies won 8-0 and after that they never looked back finishing an incredible 11th place when im sure the board anmd supporters would have taken 17th place. The club also just missed out on a fa cup final beaten by Chelsea 2-1 at wembley in the semi final.

SEASON 2000/2001
Bobby Robson was looking to improve on last seasons 11th position. He bought 2 argentinian internationals Daniel Cordone on a 1 year loan deal and world club championship winner Christian Bassedas from Velez sarsfield for £3.5m.The biggest signing of the summer was the arrival of Carl Cort for £7m from wimbledon.Leaving st james that summer were Silvio Maric,Duncan ferguson,Steve Howey,Allesandro Pistone,Temuri Ketsbaia and Paul Robinson.Newcastle started the season brightly and despite a 0-2 defeat at old trafford on the opening day they led the table after beating Coventry 2-0.After this Newcastle lacked any sort of consistency and it cost them a place in europe.Bobby Robson signed 2 new players one being the youngster everybody was talking about, teenage sensation Lomana Tresor Lualua from colchester for £2.25m and the other being left back Olivier Bernard from Lens on a free transfer.Lualua sparkled as Newcastle beat Boro 3-1 at the riverside.Robsons men maintained some decent form until january when it all slipped away after a dismal run of results.Andy o Brien joined the club from Bradford but the return of injury crocked Carl Cort rescued our season.United finished a dissapointing 11th but it could have been alot worse.
